Monkeys in your Head.
What do they all have in common?
They make you believe that false things are the truth.
These are all terms for that negative selftalk you hear in your head because it is the STORY you tell YOURSELF. And guess what IT’S NOT TRUE!!!
My daughter is in swimming lessons and began working on diving this week. I watched from afar as she repeatedly extended her arms and then collapsed them at her side telling her coach “I can’t do it”. I knew the monkeys were in her head and the life coach in me sprung to action to chase them away. “If you tell yourself you can’t you’re right. If you tell yourself you can you’re right. All you have to do is CHANGE YOUR MIND. Is it true? Can you really not dive? So picture yourself diving into the water and then DO IT.”
About 5 seconds later... SHE DID!
But, the next time she went to dive the monkeys crawled back in her head (stupid monkeys). And she refused to do it. SAY WHAT!? Now this is where the magic happened...her coach (I’m guessing a boy about 17)... said “I just saw you dive. So we KNOW you CAN do it. You just have to decide that you are going to do it. It’s all up to you. You know you CAN do it!” – or something to that effect but I am certain that young boy has not been through the 150+ hours of life coach training I have been in the past 6 months. But he picked up on my language and he simply changed his words to change her mind. It was pretty freakin’ cool!
I get warm and fuzzy thinking about how he will have this coaching 101 “tool” to coach other children or himself when the monkeys start running laps in their/his head.
What have the Monkeys in YOUR HEAD telling you can’t do lately!?
